It is the largest protected area of flooded forest in the Amazon with an abundance ans vareity of wildlife and endemic species like the white Uakari monkey. It is a sustainable development reserve, wher the comunities actively participate in its management. It is the only public conservation unit in Brazil managed by an NGO, through an agreement with the ministry of science and technology, the institute for environemental Protection of Amazonas and international agencies.
Last year , through the creatiob of the adjacent Amaña reserve, Mamiraua is now part of the corridor of rainforest taht reaches all the way to the Jaù National Park on the rio negro and is the size of Costa Rica.
We had there excellent guides to spot and identify 80 species of birds that we have seen.
